Near the end of that war, there was wholesale desertion from both the Union and Confederate armies.

These deserters formed murderous gangs that preyed on the helpless ranchers. The railroad needed right of way to cross some of these ranches. The bank manager formed a gang to force the ranchers off their property, hoping to overcharge the railroad for that right of way.

Big River was protected by a dedicated sheriff named Bert Shaw. With the aid of a newcomer to town, Mr. Bill Travis, he was able to arrest and prosecute the bank manager and his gang. All properties were returned to the owners. Along the way to Big River, there were fist fights, gun fights, holdups, kidnappings, and murder. A must read for the reader who likes old west action stories.
